Reassessing Brighton Rock For the 21st Century
In terms of classic film noir, few are better made -- or more beloved -- than Brighton Rock. A tour of the city -- focused on places featured in the film -- is a spectacular way to give a theme to follow while visiting, and can make for a more memorable holiday in general. It's been more than 60 years since the film first debuted, so rent a copy, refresh your memory -- then head over to Brighton. Retracing Hale's Steps In the film, a reporter called Hale must follow a very particular path as outlined in the fictional Daily Messenger. By paying close attention to this scene, you can compare the Brighton of the late 1940s to the Brighton of today while visiting. Hale heads down toward the sea in the movie, eventually walking past the Aquarium. Why not include a visit to the aquarium while in Brighton? Snap pictures along the way to help memorialise the experience. Since you'll have recently seen the film, you're sure to see many recognisable sights. See How Things Compare Today Continuing along on Hale's path, you'll come upon the promenade. Many hotels in Brighton are located quite near the prom, making it a natural spot to serve as the headquarters for your holiday. Take your pick from among many hotels; Brighton is positively rife with them, then as now. Get refreshed at your room, then continue on your way by heading up to Kings Road. The bar featured in Brighton Rock is no longer there -- and you probably won't be running into Pinkie like Hale does -- but reminiscing is no less engaging for it. Enjoy A Guided Brighton Rock Walking Tour - Or A New Film Rather than going it alone, you could book a guided Brighton Rock walking tour. Ask the staff at hotels in Brighton about local opportunities to do so; they should be able to point you in the right direction, as they probably get asked this all the time. Interestingly enough, a remake of the original film is being made and will be filmed in coming months. During that time, it may not be easy to find any hotels. Brighton will probably be abuzz with Rock fever, so stay tuned for more news about the latest film. You might be able to catch the filming in action, and be able to see the entire Brighton Rock history come full circle.
